Devotion for Maundy Thursday

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. - John 13:35

It should come as no surprise that I have many favorite hymns. One of those hymns is entitled They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love. While most people hear this song as an affirmation of their faith, I hear the song slightly differently. When I hear the lyrics, I hear a recommitment to Christ's command to love.

"We are one in the spirit we are one in the Lord; and we pray that all unity will one day be restored." On a surface level we hear words that are comforting, but below the surface the words hold to a deeper conviction.

Unity is a complicated matter.

False unity would be creating a romanticized view of the past and then attempting to recreate that in today's time. While history is important, we cannot (nor should we) attempt to return to it. Rather, true unity is rooted in love, which liberates us and restores us to a new unity with one another and the divine.

After all, if we keep listening to the song, we hear that love commits us to guarding each person's dignity and working together side by side. It is seeing the person who society does not see and loving the person society does not love.

By this they will know we are Christ's disciples. People willing to challenge the status quo as Christ did. To encounter the world through love and to dare to believe that that love has, is, and will change the world.

Peace, Pastor Andy
